Automotive industry’s new venture set to drive vehicle to grid integration
The spotlight is firmly on the integration of electric vehicles into the power grid with the recent news that ChargeScape, a consortium of some of the biggest names in automotive manufacturing has appointed its first CEO and CTO.
Spearheaded by Alliance Board member, Ford Motor Company, along with BMW Manufacturing Co., Honda and Nissan Motor Corporation, the joint venture will focus on the integration of electric vehicles (EVs) into the power grid in the US.
This is encouraging news as we head to Enlit Europe 2024 in Milan next week where the ‘smooth integration of the EVs into the grid’ will be discussed as part of this year’s conference program. A session on day two includes panels looking at support for network operators and grid infrastructure, and the rules and standards needed to ensure proper functioning of grid systems and foster smart and flexible EV charging.
As an industry alliance, we have been addressing these issues for some while and witnessing significant industry growth driven by integration of EV charging infrastructure as a grid resource. Our membership is increasingly made up of organizations that are part of EV charging infrastructure and integration initiatives, with innovative new systems and services and business models that support this market.
OpenADR will also be important to the success of the ChargeScape initiative. A key technical component of the consortium is the Open Vehicle-Grid Integration Platform (OVGIP) of which the OpenADR standard is an integral part. OVGIP defines a scalable set of interfaces between automotive OEMs and their utility and DSO partners.
As a major industry event attracting energy companies, automotive OEMs, software platforms and technologies, Enlit Europe is the ideal platform for us to share our knowledge. We will be running sessions providing an overview of OVGIP on Weds, 23 Oct at 15:30pm and Thurs, 24 Oct at 10:30am CET on the OpenADR stand 5.J42.
We also look forward to seeing many members attending or exhibiting to learn more about their solutions and available resources facilitated by the OpenADR standard for EV charging infrastructure, renewable energy, energy storage and demand response.
Including a Digitalisation hub session on the 24th of October at 10:20 AM by Bartosz Majewski, CEO of member company Codibly. Session: Unlocking Flexibility with Digital, will discuss enhancing grid flexibility through interoperability leveraging global energy protocols.
With all things EV top of mind, I encourage you to check out our recent blogs following the New Frontiers in EV Chargingwebinar we ran in July on EV charging optimization. You can read the blogs where we interview two of our members, Marina Hod of Wevo Energy and Evan Kirchhoff at OpenRoad Technologies who take part in the discussion.
