Session overview

Session 1a: Driving OpenADR Adoption: Title 24 updates and what they mean for you – Rolf Bienert, Moderator

10:30-11:15am, Tuesday, April 24

CEC – Gabriel Taylor
PG&E – Albert Chiu
Energy Solutions – Kitty Wang

Session Objectives: Regulations are a significant building block for successful and reliable technology integration. Building standards ensure that safety and energy related aspects are taken care of in an orderly manner and that consistency is achieved.

The purpose of the Title 24 updates session is to inform the audience of the upcoming changes in the code language. We will hear from utilities and implementers how this will affect their business models and how they plan to use the new building code.

Session 1b: Driving OpenADR Adoption: Utility Programs and Mandates – James Mater, Moderator

11:15-12AM, Tuesday, April 24

Session Objectives: A critical factor in the adoption of a smart grid standard such as OpenADR is the requirement by utilities and regulators to utilize communication standards for operating customer Demand Response and DER programs.   Some key benefits of such a requirement for ratepayers and utilities are 1) reduced costs for program hardware, software and operation; 2) reduced time to implement and modify such programs; 3) increased customer participation; and 4) the increased choices available to both customers and utilities.

The purpose of the Utility DER Programs Panel is to hear from leading utilities that are using or plan to use OpenADR; the reasons for doing so; how they are going about implementing the requirements and results to date.   Examples of successful uses encourage others to use standards and lessons learned in the process help others avoid common mistakes.

Panelists:

-       Angie Eide, HECO
-       Denver Hinds, SMUD
-       Jason Delaney, APS

Session 2: DER and OpenADR: Enhancing OpenADR to Support Energy Generation Resources – James Mater, Moderator

1-2:30 pm - DER and OpenADR

Session Objectives: The OpenADR Alliance has been considering the challenges of DER communications for the past year.  The goal of this session is to update the audience on the direction, progress and opportunities that OpenADR has with respect to DER communications.

The fundamental differences between managing DR resources and DER resources are 1) any generation resource that supplied energy back to the grid comes under regulations designed to insure grid reliability while DR resources are considered most often in terms of peak management which is governed differently; 2) the utility organizations that deal with DR are usually customer-oriented teams with little to do with actual grid management operations while DER is in the purview of operational teams concerned with protection, control and grid reliability.

From a messaging perspective, DR is typically focused on informing and incentivizing load management behaviors with minimal focus on specific device control.  DER messaging, however, can be much more focused on individual device control which implies device discovery of capabilities, status, and performance and detailed device control instructions.  OpenADR was designed for the DR model.   Adapting to DER (or DER to OpenADR) is the subject of this session.

Session 3: Transactive Energy and Future Markets – Walt Johnson, Moderator

3-4:30 PM, Tuesday, April 24

Session Objectives: Transactive Energy (TE) markets offer tremendous potential for the future. OpenADR is already being used to distribute prices that result from energy markets, suggesting that it can play an important role in a transactive future. In addition to containing the OpenADR profile, the OASIS Energy Interoperation standard also defines services to support TE. This session will discuss the current application of OpenADR to TE and explore future opportunities for OpenADR with TE.

The purpose of the Transactive Energy and Future Markets Panel is to hear about projects that are using OpenADR for transactive services; the reasons for doing so; how the projects are implementing the requirements; and results to date. It will also discuss existing service definitions that could be added to OpenADR as well as exploring future options for enhancing OpenADR to meet additional TE market requirements.

Panelists:

-       Michel Kohanim, Universal Devices
-       SCE
-       Rolf Bienert, OpenADR Alliance

The panel will provide insights into experiences and prospects for using OpenADR for TE. Other sessions will cover OpenADR and DER and adoption of OpenADR through utility programs and mandates. This will be a valuable conference for anyone interested in the future of OpenADR, DER, and TE.
